Denver, CO, December 1, 2004---Kimball Genetics announces today the expansion of their celiac disease testing service to include antibody testing. Kimball Genetics’ Celiac Disease Antibody Panel will be a valuable addition to their One-Day Celiac Disease DNA Test. The Celiac Disease Antibody Panel will include testing for tissue transglutaminase IgA, anti-endomysial IgA, gliadin IgA and IgG, and total IgA level. In addition, testing for each celiac antibody will be available individually. Together, Kimball Genetics’ Celiac Disease Antibody Panel and One-Day Celiac Disease DNA Test will provide invaluable testing resources for accurately and efficiently diagnosing celiac disease.
Consistent with all testing performed by Kimball Genetics, the Celiac Disease Antibody Panel includes highest accuracy of testing, rapid turnaround time, detailed test reports, free genetic counseling for physicians and patients, andexcellent personal service
Celiac disease is a chronic, autoimmune disorder. In genetically susceptible individuals with HLA-alleles DQ2 and or/DQ8, ingestion of gluten-containing grains, especially wheat, causes inflammation of the small intestine mucosa and leads to malabsorption. Long believed to be a rare gastrointestinal disorder, celiac disease is now known to be one of the most common, under-diagnosed diseases with a wide range of gastrointestinal or non-gastrointestinal symptoms. Although silent celiac disease may lack overt clinical symptoms, damage to the gut mucosa may nevertheless be occurring. Recent studies have shown that celiac disease affects 1:100 individuals in European and North American populations.
Due to the extremely variable presentation of disease symptoms and severity, diagnosing celiac disease is difficult. Genetic testing via the Celiac Disease DNA Test, antibody testing, and small bowel biopsy are all critical tools for making a diagnosis of celiac disease. Early detection and subsequent lifetime elimination of gluten from the diet is essential in aiding prevention and treatment.
